Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy was originally invented in the late 1970’s in Japan as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. Since then, cryotherapy has been used worldwide to enhance recovery for elite athletes and treat a variety of ailments. Many studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of cryotherapy, and whole body cryotherapy is a popular form of treatment, especially in Europe. Many professional sports teams, especially in the NBA, have begun using whole body cryotherapy as a competitive edge for their teams.

How Cryotherapy Works

Cryotherapy is a form of cold therapy, like an ice bath or an ice pack but in only three minutes and with none of the pain. Cryotherapy is similar to a sauna, except instead of heat you use extreme cold temperatures. You simply step into the cryosauna for three minutes, where temperatures reach as low as -160° to -300°. The brief time you are exposed to the low temperatures isn’t long enough to cause any body or tissue damage. Cryotherapy uses nitrogen gas to rapidly lower the body’s temperature to 32° in less than 30 seconds and keeps it there for the rest of the session. The skin, feeling the chill, sends signals to your brain that you are going into hypothermia. This signal stimulates your body’s regulatory functions, which causes the healing and restorative benefits.

Cryotherapy Sessions

First, our expert staff will meet with you to discuss your goals and make sure you are completely comfortable with cryotherapy. We will answer any questions you may have. You will then fill out a brief questionnaire and sign a waiver.

You will then go into our dressing room and change into a robe. All patients must wear gloves and socks that will be provided for you, and no jewelry is to be worn inside the cryosauna.

Once you are ready, you simply walk up the stairs and step into the cryosauna, shutting the door behind you. Your head will always be visible and remain outside of the cryosauna. Once inside, you will remove your robe and your technician will enter the room and begin your session.

Your technician will provide any necessary instructions throughout the session. At the end of the three minute session, you will put your robe back on and step out of the sauna. You will then go back into the changing room and get dressed again.

As your body returns to normal temperature, you will feel a tingling in your skin and a boost in energy. Aches and pains will dissolve away as and a feeling of well-being will come over you! This refreshing feeling may last up to 8 hours, and ongoing treatment will help improve record and alleviate symptoms of chronic pain.
